We are commemorating Jasmine Swope this week. She has served in Thailand as a missionary for several years and now she is transitioning from a field leader to one who will be coordinating missionary-trainees preparing for the field.
I have asked Jasmine to share 5 things she would share with an aspiring missionary and this is what she said:
1. Learn the culture.
Don't expect the locals to understand you or to become like you.
You have to surrender pieces of your identity in order to live with them.
2. Learn the language.
Even the smallest efforts in the language can have a huge impact
3. Go with a team.
You'll learn a lot about yourself and about the
people you're serving with. There's power in that mutual support.
4. Try your best to eat the food and to adjust to eating it everyday.
5. Spend time in fervent prayer for the people you're serving.
Shifts in the Kingdom come through the prayers of the righteous.
Sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference. Listening to those who have gone before us can be of the greatest benefit! There are things others have learned and we can use these tools to get several steps ahead of where they began. Humility to listen to others not only helps us, but also those whom we are serving among! The Good News spreads faster when we are able to learn new ways to share and help more effectively.
I am honored to have had the opportunity to have been able to speak with Jasmine and so many other's who have been serving Christ faithfully in various locations.
